Here is what Ken had to say about 1and1 and the overall experience with their web hosting service.
At first at I was drawn to 1and1 by low prices, especially the domain prices. I decided to host there and that's when my nightmare started.

Account Setup Feedback

Account setup is fast. Upgrade from basic to developer did not have any data loss.

Host Reliability

Ok, 1and1 shared hosting to some peak traffic without flinching. The response time seems to be ok. The problem is all the downtime within the last year... and like another person stated, they don't know it's down until you call them and tell them.

Pricing Info

Pricing is about average. Domains were 6.99 when I started, are now 8.99. (about average). Hosting is on the inexpensive end. You get what you pay for. Now remember, some plans you enter in a 12 or 24 month contract!!! That's the only reason why I stayed a customer so long! Over a 6.99 domain which I was just going to let expire, they attempted to renew against an old credit card, couldn't and then reported me to credit agencies! I guess this is more of a customer support issue... I just keep remembering things that are wrong with this company!

Final Host Comments

I'm rating this company as the worst hosting company. Don't be fooled by the prices. If you have a domain that expires in 2999, you'll still be charged every year as long as they are the registrar. Watch out for domain renewals and hosting agreements... these guys spend more time reporting you to credit reporting agencies than fixing problems or providing good support.

Clueless. More than half the time tech support is wrong. I've solved about 99 percent of my problems (that were actually solvable) no thanks to technical support. The wait time is unbearable. Sales support you can get through right away and they'll pretty much tell you anything is possible just to get the sale.
