I first thought WebHost4Life was the best! Feature-loaded hosting for ASP.NET and two Microsoft SQL Server databases for $9.95/mo (plans start at $4.95). Their referral program has also treated me well. But I soon discovered my referrals were getting more web space than I was. I contacted tech support and was told that because I had signed up over a year ago with 200MB, that I did not get the new 2GB allocation, but I could get 2GB if I paid a $20 "migration" fee.
Again, in 2005 when ASP.NET 2.0 was released, it became available to all NEW WebHost4Life customers—But not for those who had signed up previously. Again a $20 "migration fee" would fix that. Are you kidding me?
Recently when I attempted to re-attach one of my two SQL Server databases, I received an error: "Max SQL Server(1) reached". I submitted a ticket with a "Priority 1 - SERVER DOWN" status and waited (there is no phone support, though they'd like you to think there is). When tech support finally got back with me hours later, they informed me that they had changed my plan to include only ONE Microsoft SQL Server database. Thanks for the notice! Odd that they didn't feel it necessary to charge me a $20 migration fee before making the change.
I could go on and on and on!

Look, eventually they get back to you. I have to give them credit for trying. But, the first time they do get back to you, they tell you to try something that you've already told them you've tried. When you tell them, "Yes, I've tried that already", you'll wait another hour or more for a response (sometimes a full day or so). Their second response will be asking you some question about HOW you went about doing what they asked you to try. So, another round wasted, you'll tell them for the second time WHAT you tried to fix the problem and HOW you tried to fix it. Eventually, they seem to get it right. Most of my support tickets only have an elapsed time of 4 days, or more. Can you live with that?
It's not that they aren't smart people and they even seem to be friendly. But they do not speak/understand English and some of them don't even speak tech.
Another example of their truly competent tech support is when you ask: "How do I..." and their entire response is "You can do this in control panel." No crap, Columbus! You mean I don't set up a sub-domain in in Photoshop?!

WebHost4Life seems to have two kinds of servers, old servers and new "high-powered Dell servers" with SAN storage. They are extremely fond of telling you about their new servers. The problem is that you won't know which servers you are truly being hosted on. When you have any problem with downtime and they've exhausted all possibility of your code being the culprit, they are very eager to suggest "migrating your site to a new server for $20". It's amazing because I don't remember signing up for the "slow" plan. So how does this become my problem for which I must pay $20?

Obviously, $11.95 for so many features is a great price. But is it worth the hassle, lack of communication and downtime? Maybe for a test website. Not for long-term.

Oh, here we go. Setup is the funnest part of hosting at WebHost4Life. Since I work in .NET, I need Frontpage Extensions to publish via HTTPS through Visual Studio. So this walk-through contains specific steps for .NET websites.
Step 1: Log into Control Panel and create a new folder. Easy.
Step 2: Create a sub-domain and map it to the new folder. Works about 97% of the time without any intervention from Tech Support.
Step 3: Wait about 5 or 10 minutes for your new sub-domain to appear in the list of sub-domains.
Step 4: Install FP Extensions from the Control Panel. This only works about 70% of the time. 3 out of 10 times you'll need to contact tech support to troubleshoot an error in the Control Panel.
Step 5: A few hours later when tech support has got your new Frontpage Extended web working, you can try publishing to it for the first time. But this is only so that you can get the error: "No Hacking!" Copy this error and contact tech support again. They need to turn off your firewall...uh...that doesn't sound good? This action by tech support is required almost 99.9% of the time.
Step 6: After a few rounds of support, you are now able to publish to your new Frontpage Extended website. Good luck!
Step 7: If you require the use of ASP.NET 2.0 or 3.5, instead of 1.1, you'll need to set that up in another area of the control panel. But about 20% of the time, that part of the control panel will fail and you'll need to contact tech support again.

I've been with WebHost4Life for over 4 years. I've put up with all of the above, because I couldn't justify a higher-priced web host. As of this week when they began pulling back features (after raising the rate for my plan—but not for new customers—only a few months ago), I can no longer justify paying them another nickel or dime.
My Final Overall Webhost4Life Rating: 4/10
