I was very exciting about using thinkhost. I like the idea they represent. I like the OS platform they use, BSD, as it gives me a far better backend server than Microsoft based backends.

Well, it goes off line, sometimes at the same time other parts of their systems fail, what can I say? They don't have a phone number you can call. They have a website which gives status, however, it is not always correct. For example, this last outage, which has prompted me to write this review, the web server is down as well as ftp, telnet, e-mail. On the status page, they list that the ftp server and administrator control panel are down. Well that is true, but the left off everything else.

I don't know what average is. But, in all fairness to Thinkhost and other hosting vendors, you need to clearly understand what they might quote as uptime. Thinkhost excludes scheduled maintenance downtime from their quoted uptime. Perhaps this is ok, perhaps not. What is most important is availability. Availability should be defined in terms of the user base not the provider. We sell our products over the internet and therefore our customers come from the internet. If the systems which give access to our website and e-mail are not reachable because a subsystem is down, then our potential customers may well look elsewhere. Lets face it, if they GOOGLE or YAHOO, see our link, click on it, get a 'site not responding' or 'can't find hostname' message, that individual will move on to the next entry in GOOGLE or YAHOO. That is a lost contact, a lost potential sale. So, we define uptime in terms of that end-user. To date, after using Thinkhost for almost 12 months, they have provided about for the services our customers use, 97.5% uptime. That amounts to 355.875 days in 1 year, or put another way, they have been unavailable to our customers for 9 days or 219 hours. Thinkhost claims a higher uptime, but, again, as they define it, it is from an internal perspective, not the internet customer base.
Certainly, if you are looking for a 24x7 system, Thinkhost, by their own definition, doesn't have what your looking for.

No issues really. Needed a couple of interactions with them to get it right.

I like the idea behind Thinkhost, I don't like the systems availability they provide. If you are selling products and they give you the same uptime they have given us, 97.5%, then you might reconsider. If you are just publishing web pages and some down time is acceptable then they are likely good. I make a clear list of your expectations and requirements before signing up with any hosting company and then do your homework.
