As of September 6th, 2007, we have been online for 8 months. During that time, it has been a labor of love adding web hosts, verifying reviews, and maintaining this site.

Near the end of April, we went through and discovered there was 8 web hosts that went out of business during this short time frame. I don’t think we had any idea how volatile web hosting really is on new startups.

As of today, May 6th, 2008, we have 561 web hosting reviews and 344 active web hosts indexed. This is way more than we expected for our first eight months. Thanks everyone who has submitted their reviews!

During this time, we also launched a sister site dedicated to virtual private server web hosts at VPS Host Reviews. Of course, we don’t expect nearly as many reviews there since VPS popularity is still warming up. However, we saw the need for a dedicated VPS review site, so we went ahead and launched it.

What is an add-on domain?

An add-on domain is a domain that points to a folder within your web folder. An add on domain allows you to run a separate web site to your primary domain. When you create an add on domain, it makes a folder in your public_html folder and you upload the site content into that folder. So essentially you are running 2 or more separate sites, separate content, off one account using the same control panel. Add-on domains also allow you to create email addresses for that additional domain name.

HostGator has given gifts to support cancer fighting initiatives, while promoting education in underdeveloped countries, following a successful 2007.

HostGator gave $100,000 to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, and $25,000 to One Laptop per Child. The gifts were decided upon by HostGator management and staff, including a significant contribution to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Brent Oxley, President of HostGator noted,

”The gift to Anderson reflected a mix of the wishes of the staff here at HostGator and suggestions from our users. It’s pretty hard to find anybody whose life hasn’t been touched in some way — directly or indirectly — by cancer. We gave to them, partly because we’re located in Houston and some of our employees have had family members treated there, but mostly we gave because of their amazing country-wide reputation for treating patients and researching cancer cures.”

In addition. HostGator donated to the international organization, One Laptop Per Child. The Anderson Cancer Center received a gift of $100,000 and One Laptop per Child received $25,000. The goal of One Laptop per Child is spelled out in its name: to improve the educational opportunities for children in underdeveloped regions by giving every child access to an inexpensive, durable, web-capable laptop. At $100 each, the gift from HostGator should provide at least 250 laptops.

The gift to One Laptop per Child was another easy decision, according to Mr. Oxley,

”If it wasn’t for the internet and computers we wouldn’t be in business. If just one of the kids can further their knowledge in computers and make a career out of it, in some shape or form, it will have been worth every penny.”

One of the complaints we’ve seen with BlueHost and HostMonster recently is the fact they limit CPU resources too severely. Recently, BlueHost has announced they have heard the complaints and addressed it head on!

Here is a quote from the president of BlueHost:

BlueHost and HostMonster have a CPU quota limit in place to try and mitigate the server problems that a single user or a small set of users can create. This is custom software that we have written ourselves. I know of no other shared host that has this ability to limit cpu quota by user for Linux.

The problem has been that our software was written at a time when single or dual cpus were the norm. This was the case when BlueHost first started. However, our current servers have at least 8 cpu cores. Most of our cpu intensive software is also multi-threaded and can be effectively distributed across multiple cpus effeciently.

Because modern cpus in general have more cores, run at a lower frequency, and most of our hosting software is designed to run in this type of environment it has become VERY apparent that we needed to update the way we calculated “cpu usage”.

Effective immediately (Actually as of Friday January 25th) we have altered the way we calculate CPU usage. Each user’s cap is now approximately double what we had it set to previously. Many users have complained lately that our cpu quotas were overly restrictive. I believe these changes should reduce the number of people that run into this problem by about 90%. We will continue to tweak our settings to stop only the most abusive of users on the system. This was never meant as a way to limit functionality, but rather a way to guarantee resources for servers that are shared by many users.

This should make life MUCH better for those users that have been bumping up against this limitation.

Because of this recent move, we decided to move BlueHost to our #2 position for the best web hosts. Now that BlueHost is the fastest growing web host, we have no reason not to place them as #2!
