Dotster Editor's Review

Dotster is a very popular domain name registrar that offers reliable web hosting to their clients. Dotster offers Linux hosting, Windows hosting, and blog hosting.

Dotster offers three tiers of web hosting plans for both their Linux hosting and Windows hosting packages called basic hosting, deluxe hosting, and ultra hosting. The basic hosting is priced on average of other web hosts but offers very limited disk space, bandwidth, and only allows 1 domain. For a few dollars more per month, you can upgrade to deluxe to host up to 50 domains on one account.

Editor's Comments About Dotster Price Value

Dotster offers several web hosting plans that, depending on your needs, may, or may not suit you needs. As we started above, if you need to host more than one domain with your account, you are probably better off looking for unlimited domain hosting which will offer great hosting, allows unlimited domains, and costs less.

Otherwise, if you want to host one major website such as a large business site that gets substantial traffic, Dotster may be the right answer with their basic hosting plan.

Editor's Comments About Dotster Reliability

Dotster is reported to be reliable as far as stability and uptimes. However, some customers expressed concern over Dotser's control panel that may cause you to get locked out of your account, or, cause other access issues that will dampen productivity.

Editor's Comments About Dotster Control Panel

The control panel Dotster uses for their web hosting is Parallels Automation. Parallels has been reported to not be very user friendly and can have problems that require a system administrator to fix. You may experience the need to contact the customer support of Dotster when using their control panel.

Editor's Comments About Dotster Customer Support

Dotster is rated as average on customer hosting reviews because of limitations on their customer support options. Dotster also has had complaints in 2009 about their support not being 24/7 as they advertise, however, there have been no recent complaints regarding this issue so they may have fixed any issues.

Dotster offers the follow support options.
  • 24/7 Toll only telephone support (no toll-free option)
  • Email ticket system
  • Limited archaic knowledgebase

Overall, after reviewing Dotster for their support options, we found several issues that caused us to rate them low. First, they do not offer toll free telephone support. If you need to call them for any reason, expect toll charges. Second, no live chat option. Sometimes it is nice to sign on and send a quick live chat support request should an issue arise, but with Dotster, this is not an option. Third, Dotster has a limited knowledgebase for their customers that appears to be outdated. There is no easy way to browse all knowledgebase articles and the best option for you would be search and to hope for the best.
