Here is what Kevin Cross had to say about 1and1 and the overall experience with their web hosting service.

Originally, I thought 1and1 would be an outstanding place tgo register a number of domain names and host some smaller websites I had been working on for clients. The pricing was very competitive and I recommended that a number of my clients use the service (a recommendation I have now withdrawn)

Account Setup Feedback

Account setup, of course, is easy. Paying them money is a streamlined process. Getting them to live up to their commitments is a whole different story.

Host Reliability

My web hosting service is down so frequently that I am going to migrate it to another service. It was down almost daily for a period of time each day over a period of 4 months straight! 1and1's claim to provide 98% reliability turned out to be fictional in my case ... unless they meant the service was down 98% of the time. I knew the day that I started showing local versions of websites when I visited client sites (because I feared the normal "Server Not Available" message at 1and1) that I was moving away from this lousy hosting service.

Average ... assuming you get what you pay for, which in terms of reliability ... you don't.

Final Host Comments

Do yourself an enormous favor. Find a different webhosting service. 1and1 is too hit-and-miss. If you take a look at recent reviews on this site, you will see that all the latest reviews are ... negative.

To be honest, customer support at 1and1, while friendly on the whole, seems to be mainly window dressing. 90% of the responses I receive from them when I contact them about their regular reliability issues come back as: "Your server is running now. Sorry for the inconvenience." I have written customer service about half a dozen times now about reliability problems with their web hosting service and never received an adequate response. Also, response times vary in length, but usually exceed the 24 hour time frame they cite on their website.
